My daughter is autistic and has always struggled with her hair. She hates it long, but at the same time hates people touching her hair and is not a big fan of brushes, hair washing and generally having her head or hair manipulated in any way. I emailed in advance to let the hairdresser know, and simply asked that she let my daughter know what’s going on, when and how, and check if she’s happy with things as they go along. This being the best way to help my daughter manage her worries. She shows her anxiety by talking non-stop - usually nonsense or making noises (vocal tics), jiggling her legs, picking her skin and being almost impossible to keep still in order to make any kind of straight cuts. This tends to result in a stressful and disastrous result, so both of us tend to go into hair dressers expecting difficulty. But this is honestly the calmest I’ve EVER seen her in a hairdressing situation. Kat talked through the style my daughter wanted, advised her according to her hair type (she has fine hair strands but loads of it!) and checked-in with every step of the process. It seemed like no effort to Kat at all, to be so naturally compassionate. She didn’t rush, and didn’t show any of the contempt or condescending talk that as a mum of an autistic child I’ve had to learn to bite my tongue against. The end result was the biggest smile on my daughter’s face. She came out literally bouncing with a fabulous hair cut that she utterly loved. We’ll be back when it’s closer to prom, maybe for a special style to match her dress, and I suspect my other daughter and I shall be joining their customer base as regulars. Rebecca is my stylist and I'm so happy with the way she does my hair, she always listens to what I want and I really value her knowledge and opinions. I just have to give huge recognition to the young girl who took my colour off today though and she was called Bella. Never before has anyone taken so much care and attention in making sure the colour did not stain my face and was so thorough and gave such a professional wash and massage, she really impressed me. I have a good feeling this girl will go far, keep up the great work Bella!
